During the week of May 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were younger than 21.

During the week of May 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 13; Kona and Puna, five each; and South Kohala, four.

So far this year, there have been 355 DUI arrests compared to 462 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23.2 percent.

There have been 529 major accidents so far this year compared to 601 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to five during the same period last year, an increase of 80 percent.

To date, four fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — one to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
