A fire that spread from a rubbish or green waste burn pile has destroyed at least one home in the Green Sands Subdivision.

A fire that spread from a rubbish or green waste burn pile has destroyed at least one home in the Green Sands Subdivision.

The blaze was reported at 10:36 a.m. Monday and fire fighters were still engaging it at around 5 p.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Gantry Andrade.

He said dry conditions and strong winds were spreading the fire, which had burned about 15 acres.

“(Conditions) are not in our favor right now,” Andrade said.

Two residential structures were destroyed with one confirmed as a home, he said.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter at Naalehu Community Center for those who needed to evacuate due to the fire and heavy smoke conditions.

The fire occurred on Kaalualu Road. No injuries were reported.
