A fire that spread from a rubbish or green waste burn pile destroyed at least one home Monday in the Green Sands Subdivision.

A fire that spread from a rubbish or green waste burn pile destroyed at least one home Monday in the Green Sands Subdivision.

The blaze was reported at 10:36 a.m. and firefighters still were engaging it at about 5 p.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Gantry Andrade.

He said dry conditions and strong winds were spreading the fire, which burned about 15 acres as of that evening.

“(Conditions) are not in our favor right now,” Andrade said.

Two residential structures were destroyed with one confirmed as a home, he said.

The Red Cross opened a shelter at Naalehu Community Center for those who needed to evacuate because of the fire and heavy smoke conditions.

The fire occurred on Kaalualu Road. No injuries were reported.
