A gift? Isn’t caregiving a burden?

A gift? Isn’t caregiving a burden?

Award-winning author Frances Kakugawa will give a talk titled “Caregiving: A Gift” at 5 p.m. May 19 at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole St., Hilo.

Kakugawa will discuss her own experiences and those of others who discovered caregiving for someone with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases can be one of the most humanizing and gratifying experiences.

“There is no cure for Alzheimer’s today and no matter what we do, this disease is here to stay,” Kakugawa says.

Kakugawa will discuss how to redefine our relationship with this disease and with those afflicted by it through poetry, stories, communication skills and insights she has gathered since her mother’s illness.

Kakugawa strongly believes the best help and care comes from inside out.

Born in Kapoho, Kakugawa was a caregiver for her mother and is an internationally published, award-winning author of several books on caregiving.
