A Tuesday afternoon fire in Kona caused an estimated $70,000 in damage to a golf course maintenance and storage shed and its contents.

According to a Fire Department statement, three units responded to the 2:02 p.m. alarm at Makalei Golf Club. The first unit arrived nine minutes later to find the metal-frame structure with lawn mowers, a forklift, two maintenance carts and fertilizer “totally engulfed.”

The fire was “starting to impinge” on a 500-gallon gasoline storage tank, according to the statement. The fire was reported under control at 2:30 p.m. and extinguished at 2:45 p.m.

An estimated $10,000 in property value was saved. The cause of the fire is unknown.
