Are you an eager epicurean, an avid horticulturalist or just interested in mushrooms?

Are you an eager epicurean, an avid horticulturalist or just interested in mushrooms?

Grab a hammer, log and drill and join instructor Zach Mermel at Volcano Art Center’s Mushroom Cultivation workshop from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on May 2.

Learn how you can grow your own and incorporate gourmet and medicinal mushrooms into your life and livelihood. Mushrooms are an excellent source of vegetarian protein and nutrition with the added bonus of “easy to grow.”

The art of mushroom cultivation has been around since the Middle Ages, when the white mushroom was first cultivated in Europe.

The health benefits of mushrooms are well-known and their ecological advantages are just now being fully realized.

Mermel will teach the basics of fungal biology and how fungal mycelium colonizes different materials, particularly wooden logs and straw. He also will cover the health benefits of different edible and medicinal fungi in Hawaii.

Participants will gain hands-on experience inoculating their own mushroom kits as well as logs which they can take home at the end of the day. Mermel says that students, as well as adults, have found this workshop to be fun and informative.

Course fees are $40 for VAC members and $50 for nonmembers plus a $25 supply fee. Pre-registration is required, and participants should bring a lunch.
