During the week of April 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

During the week of April 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 9; South Hilo, 8; Puna and South Kohala, 2 each; and Ka‘u, 1.

So far this year, there have been 271 DUI arrests compared to 376 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.9 percent.

There have been 395 major accidents so far this year compared to 472 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to four during the same period last year, an increase of 75 percent.

To date, four fatalities have been linked to impaired driving due to drugs, police said, and none to alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
