UHH baseball loses to Cal Baptist to extend slide
The UH-Hilo baseball team lost a doubleheader to Cal State Baptist 14-2 and 9-8 on Thursday in Riverside, Calif., extending its losing streak to eight straight games.
It was incorrectly reported the other day that the Vulcans had a 16-game losing skid.
Their last victory was March 23 at Azusa Pacific, where UHH won 4-3.
With the twinbill loss to the Lancers, the Vuls have now lost 17 of their last 18 games.
UHH (6-23) has 18 games left and would need to go undefeated to snap a collegiate record 23-year losing streak that covers the NCAA Division I and II and NAIA levels.
It is UHH coach Kallen Miyataki’s second season. The Vuls finished 14-33 last year.
In the 14-2 Game 1 loss, Sam Kim had two of UHH’s five hits.
Chris Hubocan (0-3) gave up seven runs on seven hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings in the loss. Jordan Kumasaka followed and allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings on seven hits and two walks.
Freshman right-hander Cole Nakachi was the most effective pitcher with 4 1/3 innings of two-run ball.
No information was available for Game 2.
The Vuls play another doubleheader on Friday to close a 16-game road trip.
Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament June 11
The Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at 7 a.m. Thursday, June 11 at Hilo Muni.
Entry fee is $125 and includes green fee, cart, par three closest to the pin, team prizes, and lunch at Kim’s at the Hilo Muni.
Funds raised will be used for the Nobu Yamauchi RBI travel teams, RBI youth league teams, and partial scholarship for RBI players who will be attending college. One male and one female scholarship will be given.
