Words such as “intuition” and “letting go” don’t seem like they belong in an art workshop.

Words such as “intuition” and “letting go” don’t seem like they belong in an art workshop.

But then again, this is process painting.

Volcano Art Center is pleased to bring back “Process Painting” with Patricia Hoban.

If you want to learn how to paint like Rembrandt, this isn’t the class for you. If you want to let the brush, guided by instinct and the subconscious, teach you about yourself, then throw away the rule book on how you should paint, tell your inner critic to take a hike and sign up for Hoban’s class.

“When we move from judgment to curiosity, the whole world starts to open up,” Hoban said. “In a way, the canvas reflects what’s going on inside of us and helps to express what can’t be said in words.”

Hoban, who has a degree in fine arts and education, studied process painting at the Center for Creative Exploration in San Francisco. She has been facilitating process painting workshops since 2005.

The artist shares a final thought from Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu about intuition and creativity: “A good artist lets his intuition lead him wherever it wants.”

The workshop is from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. April 11 at VAC’s Niaulani Campus. The cost is $50 for VAC members and $55 for non-members, with a $5 supply fee. Bring a lunch and drinks, and wear painting clothes.

For more information or to register for the workshop, visit www.volcanoartcenter.org or call VAC at 967-8222. No previous art education or painting experience is necessary.
