“Youth of today, leaders of tomorrow!” cheered the members of Ohana Hawaiian Ninja Turtles.

This was the unofficial theme proclaimed by the participants of Rotary Clubs of Hawaii Island’s 2015 Rotary Youth Leadership Academy on March 13 at Kilauea Military Camp.

More than 40 high school students from around the island attended the weekend camp to improve their communication, organization and collaboration skills, all while developing lasting friendships — and creating catchy names for their learning groups.

Some of this year’s lessons were “Active Listening,” “Recognizing Different Perspective,” “Building a Vision” and “Integrity.” Students also participated in a half-day ginger irradiation project and enjoyed the beautiful trails of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as they learned about indigenous plants.

“The mission of this camp is to give teenagers a safe and engaging environment where their skills, abilities and talents can flourish,” said training chairwoman Gail Takaki of the Rotary Club of Hilo.

The camp is hosted each year with members of Big Island Rotary clubs as facilitators and presenters. Students must pre-register to be considered for a spot. Past youth participants are invited to return as youth facilitators, further strengthening their leadership skills.

“We are so grateful to the Rotarians who volunteer to make this camp possible,” said camp manager Scott Unger of the Rotary Club of Kona. “They are always inspired by the creativity and enthusiasm of the camp participants.”
