Puna Mermaids are busy preparing for the Mermaid’s Ball at 7 p.m. March 28 at at the Eagles Club in Keaau.

The costume ball promises to be fun with music, dancing and comedy performed by the best female talent Puna has to offer, but the Queen of the Mermaids costume contest will be highly competitive this year.

There are two costume categories: Mermaids and then “most creative” for all other sea creatures. Not everyone will wear a costume, but the theme makes getting in the spirit really easy — just pop on a sailor hat or a snorkel. The prizes make it all worth the effort.

This event will raise awareness and support for the free “Healing Through The Performing Arts” programs in Puna for survivors of violence and sexual assault, sponsored by Triple Threat Productions and Hale Ohia O Po‘mai‘ka‘i Healing and Performance Center. During weekly workshops, ladies focus on how to address women’s issues using expressions in dance, music and drama/comedy.

The entertainment line up for the ball includes Sherri Cardin, Kat Hughes, Bonnie Masterjohn, Lexa Avelin, Doris Rose Saxer, Destiny O’Hara, Marina Curtis, Ginelle Dickson, Faith Blanch, Dr. Sally Boyd, Rrika Guiness, Sandi Alstrand, Dennis Alstrand, Ilana Acevedo, Laura Guitara and Kaonohi Jerimiah.

Fun, food, friends, femme fatales and fantastic entertainment are guaranteed during this fantasy ball.
