Boys &Girls Club Big Island (BGCBI) invites the community to “Inspiring Youth,” the third-annual Youth of the Year Awards banquet and fundraiser scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Moku Ola Ballroom.

Boys &Girls Club Big Island (BGCBI) invites the community to “Inspiring Youth,” the third-annual Youth of the Year Awards banquet and fundraiser scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Moku Ola Ballroom.

The Youth of the Year Award honors an extraordinary young person for excellence in leadership, character and outstanding service to community, academic achievement, leading a healthy lifestyle, poise and public speaking ability.

Benjamin Cortez Jr. and Tyler Nahinu are this year’s BGCBI Youth of the Year candidates. The winner will be announced at the event.

The Big Island winner will move on to statewide competition later in the month. The state winner will participate in regional competitions, and five regional winners will compete for the coveted national Youth of the Year title and formal honor by President Obama. Scholarships are awarded to winners at every level.

At the “Inspiring Youth” event BGCBI, will honor those who have been instrumental in the club’s success with Big Island youth. This year’s honorees are:

• Warren Lee, county Public Works director, will receive the Honoree of the Year Award. He is a BGCBI Emeritus Board member and long-time supporter of Big Island communities and youth.

• Big Island Table Tennis Association will receive the Champions for Youth Award for its long-standing dedication to providing opportunities for our youth.
