Officer Kelly Moniz and Fire Prevention Inspector Kyle Vares were selected as the 2015 recipients of the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaii Police Officer and Firefighter of the Year, respectively. The annual awards banquet honors the most outstanding police officer and firefighter in the county.
Officer Kelly Moniz and Fire Prevention Inspector Kyle Vares were selected as the 2015 recipients of the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaii Police Officer and Firefighter of the Year, respectively. The annual awards banquet honors the most outstanding police officer and firefighter in the county.
Moniz has more than 10 years serving as a police officer and has conducted investigations leading to the arrest and indictments of high level drug traffickers. He has worked with the Drug Enforcement Agency, police officers from the mainland and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), comprised of special agents from the FBI.
Vares has been with the Hawaii Fire Department for more than five years as a fire hazardous materials specialist and a member of the response unit. He has held the position of Fire Prevention Inspector I for the last two years. He is instrumental with the HFD’s role in doing fire investigations, site inspections and construction document reviews. Vares has been tasked with community programs to install smoke devices and detectors in elderly homes throughout the county.
The awards will be presented during the awards banquet that starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19. The cost to attend the banquet at Nani Mau Gardens Restaurant is $50 per person. Friends, family and personnel of the fire and police departments are invited to this special event.
