Hilo High is accepting applications for a varsity boys basketball coach and a varsity boys and girls cheerleading coach.

Applications can be picked up at the school’s main office, and the deadline to apply is March 18.

NRA shooting course upcoming

The Waiakea Recreation Center will offer an NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course for ages 10 and up.

The program will be held from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. March 16 at the center, and from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. March 20 at the county trap and skeet range.

The cost is $25 and registration is open to the first 10 paid participants.

Junior golf day slated March 21

The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association will hold its fourth annual junior golf day at 10 a.m. March 21 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course and Mauna Kea Resort.

According to a release, the event is “a fun and free introductory golf experience for juniors (5-18).”

Kamehameha seeks assistant

Kamehameha is taking applications for an assistant cheerleading coach (Requisition No. 015139) through Tuesday.

State horseshoe qualifier tourney

Tiffany Ferreira won the singles title, while Enrique Madera and Darlene Calles-Christian won the doubles title as the Hilo Ohana Horseshoe Pitchers Club held a state qualifier Feb. 14-15 at Uncle David Calles Sr. Horseshoe Courts.

B.A.D Company: Trap and skeet range results

Ronald Nakamura and Dana Okazaki were the top guns at a B.A.D. Company shoot in January at the county trap and skeet range.

The 100-target sub-gauge even included wobble trap and skeet games:

The club’s next shoot will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 8. All shotguns, clay targets, ammunition and eye and ear protection must be supplied by the participant.

UHH Hall of Fame

Nominations for the 19th UHH Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame are being accepted by Vulcans Booster Club.

Categories for prospective honorees are athlete, coach, administrator and community member.

Athlete nominees must have completed their eligibility at UHH and completed their playing days at the end of the spring 2009 season. Exceptions may be made for inability to complete due to physical/medical reasons. Graduation from UHH is not a requirement, but graduates will receive preference from the selection committee.

Coach, administrator or community nominees must have made significant contributions that enhanced the image of Vulcan athletics. A coach or administrator must not have served the UHH athletic department in a paid capacity within the past five years. There is no waiting period for community nominees.

The nomination deadline is April 15 for Fall induction.

Hole-in-one

Rodney Tanaka aced the 177-yard 10th hole Sunday using a 3-wood at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Kenneth Olivera, Nito Macabio, Ken Beauchamp and Layne Shibata witnessed Tanaka’s first hole-in-one.
