Rebecca Folsom’s music has been described as the soulfulness of Etta James, the abandon of Janis Joplin and a touch of folk songstress Joni Mitchell. An award-winning artist, she has performed on BBC radio and television, Nashville’s Bluebird, New York’s Bitterend and Red Rock’s Amphitheatre in Colorado.

Folsom has played her music in solo performances to shows with up to seven band members in a music career spanning 20 years. Now, she’s bringing it all to Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus for an intimate acoustic concert from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, March 7. Tickets are $15.

The Boulder, Colo., native writes tales of human heartbreak, redemption and freedom. She shares those songs with intimacy in a solo performance. Folsom said performing on stage is where she feels most comfortable.

“There is no place on earth that I want to be more. I’m happiest there, time flies there. It’s timeless, effortless and it brings me so much joy. My hope is always that it will bring other people joy, upliftment and awakening,” she said.

She also will be offering the “Art, Poetry and Performance” workshop from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 8. The workshop will merge art, singing and writing prose. Attendees will be able to work/play with all three artistic mediums at the same time. Cost for the workshop is $25.

Folsom said working with students made touring a much more rich affair.

“The whole experience got deeper, because rather than just showing up in a town, we are immersed in the community,” she said.
