“Are you having trouble discussing Albizia tree removal with your neighbor? Is your landlord non-responsive when you contact them about your concerns? Or do you have a difference of opinion with your claims adjustor on liability or damages?

“If so, mediation might be right for you,” said the mediation center’s executive director Julie Mitchell. “For those who have exhausted other options and are now thinking of filing legal actions, we suggest folks try mediation first.”

Mediation is a method of alternate dispute resolution in which an impartial third party, the mediator, assists parties to successfully resolve their conflict in a satisfactory way.

Mediation is based on self-determination, meaning the participants themselves decide the outcome, rather than a judge or arbitrator. It also is voluntary, confidential and neutral.

“The mediators are not there to take sides or determine guilt,” Mitchell noted.

“Rather, they are there to empower people to come together — to talk and to listen, to explore options, and to find their own best solutions.”

Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center also is providing free facilitations for larger group discussions, such as homeowners associations, to resolve community issues related to Tropical Storm Iselle.

These free services are made possible by Hawaii Island United Way funds specifically earmarked to help Puna residents in the aftermath of Iselle.
