A 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man died Tuesday in waters off a popular Kona beach.

A 52-year-old Kailua-Kona man died Tuesday in waters off a popular Kona beach.

He has been identified as 52-year-old James Michael “Mike” Call, who worked in the West Hawaii Today newsroom.

Police and Fire responded shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a potential drowning. Call was found floating in waters 100 yards offshore at Kua Bay.

When responders arrived, bystanders were attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but Call remained unresponsive. Fire/Rescue personnel took over CPR and took him to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Police do not suspect foul play.
