During the week of Nov. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of Nov. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 10; Kona, 7; South Kohala, 3; Puna and Ka‘u, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 1,048 DUI arrests compared to 1,189 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.9 percent.

There have been 1,391 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,206 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been 11 official traffic fatalities compared to 24 during the same period last year, a decrease of 54.2 percent.

To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and another three, a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
