The state Office of Planning is hosting meetings on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island to hear from interested stakeholders about the effectiveness of the state’s land use system.

These meetings might be of particular interest to land owners, developers, farmers, conservationists, planners and others who had or will have experience with state land use, district boundary amendments and special permit matters.

Meetings will include an overview of the state’s land use system and participants will be asked to share their land use system experiences and offer ideas for improving the land use system.

Meetings planned for the Big Island are scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Aupuni Center conference room in Hilo, and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Natural Energy Lab Hawaii conference room in Kailua-Kona.

The Office of Planning, the state’s planning agency, is responsible for statewide comprehensive and regional planning, including representing the state’s interests in land use matters before the state Land Use Commission, such as the reclassification of land.

The office works closely with counties and other state agencies to evaluate whether proposed projects and reclassifications heard by the Land Use Commission “preserve, protect and encourage the development of the lands in the state for those uses to which they are best suited for the public welfare.”
