Sonoma State was at the top, Holy Names was at the bottom and — thanks to a pair of Waiakea graduates — the University of Hawaii at Hilo could be found somewhere in the middle.

Alison Tengan carded her worst score of the tournament with an 86 during the final round Tuesday, but she led the way for the Vulcans for the first time this season, finishing ninth at the Dennis Rose Invitational.

Tengan, a sophomore, finished at 37-over, one stroke and one spot ahead of another former Warrior, Vulcans freshman Andi Igawa (84).

Sonoma State dominated the five-team field, posting four golfers in the top five. Haley Whitbeck closed with a 75 to hold off hard-charging teammate Alexis Hayes (70) for a one-stroke victory in the Division II tournament.

The Seawolves’ 77-over 918 total was 46 strokes clear of runner-up St. Martin’s. Hawaii Prep made up four strokes Tuesday and edged the Vulcans by a shot for third.

Vulcans freshman Erin Costes carded her third consecutive 83 and was 11th at 39-over; sophomore Shannon Abarra (86) was 62-over; and freshman Mariah Paiste (88) turned in a 55-over.

Holy Names golfers occupied the final five spots.

In four fall tournaments, the Lady Vulcans’ best finish was third. While they go on hiatus until February, the men take center stage at Waikoloa at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, which runs Friday and Saturday.
