17 motorists arrested for DUI

During the week of Oct. 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than the age of 21.

During the week of Oct. 20-26, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona and South Hilo, 5 each.

• South Kohala, 4.

• Puna, 3.

So far this year, there have been 944 DUI arrests compared to 1,063 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.2 percent.

There have been 1,282 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,116 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities compared to 23 during the same period last year, a decrease of 56.5 percent.

To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
