Police have arrested and charged a Hilo man with attempted murder for his alleged role in an altercation in Hilo early Saturday morning.

Police have arrested and charged a Hilo man with attempted murder for his alleged role in an altercation in Hilo early Saturday morning.

At 2 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 400 block of West Kawili Street and found a 21-year-old Hilo man with a neck injury. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

According to police, the victim had attempted to break up a fight between a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy when the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Atkinson Nakashima of Hilo, allegedly struck the victim in the neck with a machete. Nakashima was arrested at the scene and taken to the Hilo police cellblock.

Atkinson was charged at 4 p.m. today with attempted second-degree murder. His bail was set at $50,000. He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday afternoon.
