A breakthrough for University of Hawaii at Hilo soccer was followed by a breakdown.

A breakthrough for University of Hawaii at Hilo soccer was followed by a breakdown.

In a match that included about only one shot every 15 minutes, Point Loma’s Morgan Pearce made hers count, scoring her first career goal in double overtime Saturday to down the Lady Vulcans 2-1 at the campus baseball field.

UHH (5-2-2, 2-1-1) saw a seven-match unbeaten streak end. The Lady Vuls hadn’t lost since the opener against Cal State-Los Angeles, which was the last time UHH allowed two goals and also its last home game.

Ashley Borja-Roese scored on a header with just more than 10 minutes remaining in regulation as UHH tied the match 1-1. Taylor Wright drew an assist.

Considering its proclivity for avoiding losses and the scarcity of scoring opportunities between the two teams, UHH had to like its chances to at least earn another point.

But in the 105th minute, Pearce headed in a cross from Shelby Murphy. Natalie Swift opened the scoring in the 14th minute for the Sea Lions (4-2, 3-0).

There were only seven shots in the game, three by the Vulcans.

UHH will try to rebound at 7 p.m. Monday at home against Azusa Pacific (2-6, 0-2).

Earlier, Scott Hill scored the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute, and the University of Hawaii at Hilo beat Point Loma 2-1 in its home opener.

Cristian Ruelas scored in the fourth minute for the Vulcans (3-5-1, 1-3), who ended a three-game losing streak.

“We were more aggressive and intense than we have been,” UHH director of soccer Lance Thompson said in a university release. “The guys have bought into the changes we’ve made and it’s great to get the result of the hard work they’ve put in the last couple of days.”

The Sea Lions (0-7-1, 0-3) got a goal from Joshua Eusebio in the 41st minute.

Erik Lund and Mike Reckmeter garnered assists for the Vulcans, who held an 8-4 advantage in shots.

UHH faces Azusa (4-2, 1-1) at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
