The motto of the Big Island Press Club is: “Since 1967 – protecting the public’s right to know.”

Perhaps they should consider updating the motto, since they declined to invite the Libertarian gubernatorial candidate, Jeff Davis, to the Governor Candidate Forum on Oct. 9.

‘Over a barrel’

Do they think that we do not know? Do Hawaii gasoline distributors think that we don’t know that the price of mainland gas has recently fallen about 50 cents a gallon? The average price for mainland regular is about $3.35 a gallon. This sharp price reduction reflects the current cost of crude of about $95 a barrel.

In Hilo, the average price for regular is about $4.09 a gallon. This price is based on crude when it was selling for about $107 a barrel. Using these comparisons, the price for regular in Hilo could be around $3.75 a gallon.

But will we ever see this lower price, when they can charge us whatever they want to?

I don’t think that Hilo motorists will ever see a reduction in gas prices which corresponds with this lower price of crude oil. Do you?

I guess we can say that the oil distributors have us “over a barrel,” don’t they?

Canine advice

I am a dog person and others say a true ” dog whisperer.” I understand them deeply.

It breaks my heart when I see a dead dog on the side of the road — even worse, a puppy. I blame the owner; it takes a little responsibility to make sure the gate is closed or the dog is tied up, if there is no fence.

A dog’s biggest pleasure and purpose in life is to please his/her owner and to hang around with him. Chances are the dead puppy I saw (recently) was trying to follow his owner. All he really wanted to do is to play and then, in a year or so, do his part in protecting his family.

You don’t have to mistreat a dog to be a good watchdog; they’ll naturally be so much better at it for love than out of fear.

I recently witnessed a guy slapping a beautiful pit-bull puppy, because he ran from the man out of fear. (Well, duh). Now, the dog is a bit bigger and bit back (yeah!) I hope they both learned, and I think they will be happy.

Please, people, watch your dogs. Love them and they will bend over backwards to do anything you ask. But they will roam, and a lot of times it’s looking for you (or a dog in heat if he isn’t fixed)!

Dog versus car never comes out good for the dog. The dog is probably wishing he/she could find you — and home
