Jeffrey “Jeff” Bassett Gallagher, 62, of Kailua-Kona died Aug. 3 in Kailua-Kona. Born in Olean, N.Y., he was a world traveler before moving to Hawaii. Celebration of life 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Kapaau. Monthly community meal to follow. Donations to Hope Services Hawaii, 296 Kilauea Ave., Hilo, HI 96720. Robert “Bob” Neil Herkes, 83, of Volcano died Aug. 21 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Iloilo, Philippines, he was a former hotel executive with Inter-Island Resorts and served on the Hawaii County Council and state Senate and House. Visitation 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Celebration of life at 11 a.m. Aloha attire. Survived by wife, Jo-Anna K. Herkes of Volcano; sons, Robert B. (Lynn) Herkes of Waimea, Ken (Beverly) Herkes of Florida, and Doug (Ann Cobb) Herkes of Waikoloa; brother, John (Sharon) Herkes of Moscow, Idaho; sister, Jana Herkes of Lihue; one granddaughter; nephews, nieces, and a cousin. Manuel Mercado Sr., 80, of Mountain View died Sept. 17 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired county landscaper. Juan “Johnny” Sagap Rivera, 84, of Lakeland, Waimea, died Sept. 2 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Zapat, Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a retired utility truck driver for the former Hamakua Sugar Co. and member of Annunciation Catholic Church. Visitation 5:30-7:15 p.m. Thursday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Waimea. Mass at 7:30 p.m. Visitation again 8:30-10:15 a.m. Friday at the church. Prayer service at 10:30 a.m. Casual attire. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Jane Shizuko Udo, 84, of Pepeekeo died Sept. 3 at home. Born in Hilo, she was a retired office manager for Hamakua Coast Federal Credit Union and member of Hilo Coast United Church of Christ.
