National Association of Counties President Riki Hokama appointed Hawaii County Council member Dennis “Fresh” Onishi to the NACo Board of Directors during the 79th annual conference, which was hosted July 11-14 in New Orleans.

Onishi is one of 10 members chosen at-large by the association president to add balance and diversity to the 129-member board.

NACo serves as the national voice of America’s counties in Washington, D.C., advocates for issues critical to counties and their taxpayers and raises public awareness about county government operations and activities.

Onishi also serves as vice president of the Hawaii State Association of Counties, a member of the board of directors for the Western Interstate Region, and serves on the NACo Transportation Steering Committee. In this position he has advocated for funding for community development block grants and for a county voice in federal transportation initiatives.

“With this appointment, I will continue to support increasing funding for our roads and bridges,” Onishi said.
