During the week of Sept. 1-7, police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of Sept. 1-7, police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 7; Kona, 6, Puna, 2; and Hamakua, 1.

So far this year, there have been 809 DUI arrests compared to 878 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.9 percent.

There have been 1,073 major accidents so far this year compared to 943 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine official Big Island traffic fatalities compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.

To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
