Eugene Matsuo Aihara, 78, of Hilo died Aug. 3 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Waipahu, Oahu, he was retired from Verizon, a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and member of the Sure Foundation Church Hilo. Visitation 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sure Foundation Church in Prince Kuhio Plaza. Memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Urn committal service 9 a.m. Friday at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by wife, Amy Aihara of Hilo; son, Keith (Jill) Aihara of Seattle; daughter, Lori (Alvin) Sugiyama of Hilo; brothers, Toru Aihara of Torrance, Calif., and Raymond Aihara of Kula, Maui; sisters, Chieko Hashizume and Sachiko Komata of Wahiawa, Oahu; sisters-in-law, Leatrice Aihara of Wahiawa, Edna Nakamoto of Honolulu and Natsue Nakamoto of Aiea, Oahu; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. John Lani Apana, 65, of Captain Cook died Aug. 13 at Hospice of Kona Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born in Honolulu, he was a chef. Sarah Borges, 86, of Pahoa died Aug. 19 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired manager of the former Iolani Hotel in Hilo and member of Pahoa Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Memorial Service 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Paradise Drive Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 15-1517 Paradise Dr., Keaau. No flowers. Dr. Edwin James Parks, 83, of Kurtistown died Aug. 21 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Chicago, he was a retired chemist at National Institute of Science and Technology, part-time sign language teacher for Hawaii Community Schools for Adults, public school substitute teacher and member of Multiple Association of the Deaf.
