University of Hawaii at Hilo tennis coach Karl Sloss has stepped down to pursue his certification as a registered dietitician.

University of Hawaii at Hilo tennis coach Karl Sloss has stepped down to pursue his certification as a registered dietitician.

UHH interim athletic director Tim Moore announced Sloss’ resignation Monday.

Moore said Sloss joined took over the tennis program in November 2012 and guided the program through two seasons.

“While his time with the Vulcans Athletic program has been relatively short, his contributions and efforts to provide opportunities for student-athletes have not gone unnoticed,” Moore said. “After playing short-handed in his first season, his recruiting efforts provided a full team this past and coming season.”

Moore said a search for a new coach has begun.

UHH is also winding down its search to hire a new softball coach as well as select a permanent head baseball coach.

In softball, veteran Vulcans coach Jaime Wallin stepped down in June and a new coach is expected to be named shortly.

In baseball, Kallen Miyataki spent last season as the Vulcans intermin head coach after longtime UHH coach Joey Estrella stepped down following the 2012-13 season.
