Sew Fun will begin its seventh year of providing free sewing classes on Wednesday afternoons. Participants will learn basic hand sewing and proper use of a sewing machine from adult volunteers. After completing initial learning projects, participants select and/or design the projects they wish to make. The classes are self-paced and target each individual’s skill level.

Past projects have included potholders, pillowcases, clothing, pillows, purses, aloha shirts, quilts, stuffed toys and a field trip. Sewing machines and all supplies are provided free by the program. To register, come to the church on any Wednesday when school is in session. The volunteers will gladly welcome you into the program. For additional information, please call the church at 775-0566.

“Waimea Alive! — Images of Life on the Big Island.” That’s the theme of a new amateur photo contest that will include an exhibit at Historic Spencer House Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 18-21 — coinciding with the annual 30 Days of Aloha Paniolo Parade and Waimea Hoolaulea on Saturday, Sept. 20. To make this contest more fun, photographers of all ages are welcome to enter, and original digitally altered photographs are eligible. Professional photographers will judge the entries without any knowledge of the identity of the person submitting the images, putting all on equal footing.

The exhibit will kick off, and ribbons and prizes awarded, at an opening reception from 3-5 p.m., Thursday in the 160-year-old Spencer House, which is surrounded by Waimea Center and next door to the Waimea McDonald’s. The exhibit will continue from noon to 5 p.m., Friday through Sunday, and all are welcome. Deadline to enter is 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10. Entry forms and rules are available online at www.WaimeaAlive.org andwww.HistoricSpencerHouse.org. Entry forms may also be picked up from Waimea Instant Printing, 65-1206 Mamalahoa Highway.

The entry fee for up to three images is $15 for those 18 and over, $10 for those under 18. So grab your camera and take your best shot. Who knows, maybe you will be the first grand prize winner! For more information, go towww.WaimeaAlive.org.
