“The more valid update information you know, the better you can protect yourself and your loved ones,” said Elizabeth Hansen of the American Association of University Women Hilo Branch.
The AAUW invites isle residents to learn how to protect themselves from Rat Lung Worm Disease during a free panel presentation from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Pharmacy Department at 722 South A‘ohuku St., off Nowelo Street, in Classroom LPLH1, a grey modular building.
Topics will include history of RLWD, updated information from current research, the best defenses against RLWD, specific strategies to reduce risk in Hawaii and information about medical treatment.
“Also, several families who have been affected by RLWD will present how they have been forced to cope with this chronic, long-term disease,” Hansen said.
Panelists will include Susan Jarvi, a UH-Hilo associate professor and director of the Pre-Pharmacy Program; William Pettis, dean of Oriental Medicine and director of HICOM Natural Health Clinic; Steven Jacquier, researcher and retired professor; and Marlena Dixon of the State Health Department Disease Outbreak Control Division, Disease Investigation Branch.
