Visionary artist… it’s time to meet your shrewd business twin.

Visionary artist… it’s time to meet your shrewd business twin.

For a lot of artists the business of selling their art does not come naturally. Inexperience, indifference or a classic case of avoidance behavior (whatever the reason or excuse), if you want to make more money from your art, or increase your profits, you need to sharpen your business savvy.

Self-avowed serial entrepreneur Tiffany DeEtte Shafto wants artists to ask themselves this very important question: “Do you want to increase the amount you earn from your art and are you ready to learn action steps that can help you do that?”

If so, this workshop will help you plot a course to a more successful business. You’ll learn how to maximize the value you create and how to weigh the options for marketing tools, and also simple steps to keep you in front of your current collectors and galleries while building new connections. Most importantly, she’ll help you discover opportunities to expand your career.

Sponsors Volcano Art Center, the Kohala Village Hub and the Donkey Mill Art Center are offering two sessions of the “Reframing How You Think About Your Art Business” workshop — Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Kohala Village Hub in Hawi, and Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa. Both workshops are slated for 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Cost for the full day workshop at the Kohala Village Hub is $36 for VAC members and $45 for nonmembers. To register, contact Volcano Art Center at 967-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.

Early registration for the Donkey Mill workshop is $45 for DMAC and VAC members and $50 for nonmembers. After Aug. 16 it will be $50 for DMAC/VAC members and $55 for nonmembers. Deadline for the Aug. 30 workshop at DMAC is Aug. 23. Call DMAC or visit www.donkeymillartcenter.com to register.

Shafto is an award-winning woodworker and an active community volunteer. She has served on several boards including the Hawaii Craftsmen and the national Craft Organization Development Association, and as the project manager for the Hawaii Island Network of Artists research report and website. Most recently, Shafto was a partner in The Gallery at Hualalai at Four Seasons Hualalai Resort. All of these experiences have given her a deep appreciation of Hawaii’s artists and for representing them at the very highest level.

Worksheets will be provided and the workshop will wrap up with private portfolio and marketing reviews. Participants are encouraged to bring sample art work for review and a potluck dish to share for lunch.

These workshops are supported in part by a grant from the state of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism’s Creative Industries Division.
