The Waiakea Lions Club and other community volunteers had a fine time fixing up the Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island Hilo Clubhouse. They painted the former pool area, built benches, worked in the garden, cleaned floors and walls and washed windows.

The Waiakea Lions Club sponsored the work day June 28. Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island was once again selected by Waiakea Lions as the recipient of their Weinberg Project, supported by the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. Along with this service project, the B&GC was awarded a check for $10,000 from the foundation to further the mission of all three entities.

B&GCBI and the Waiakea Lions Club have a long history of partnership, as far back as the 1960s, when the Lions helped construct the baseball fields in Hilo and installed the fencing that still stands today. Many members of the Waiakea Lions Club also once were members of the Boys &Girls Club and now are giving back by volunteering, said Zavi Brees-Saunders, chief professional officer of the B&GC of the Big Island.
