The Kahilu Theatre is hosting a free Family Fun Day from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10.

The event celebrates the launch of the theater’s 2014-15 season, with more information about the shows and events to be released to the public, including ticket sales, that day. The day will be full of family fun and entertainment inside and surrounding the theater including magic, dance, musical theatre, circus acts, live music and food trucks.

The Great Barusky will be walking through the lobby and galleries performing close-up magic, and will perform a full magic show at noon.

Life in Pursuit, a young three-piece group from the Hamakua Coast, will play from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on the lobby stage.

Brothers Chase and Carl Kauhane and longtime friend Ryan Higgins grew up together, and in 2009, after playing music together for months, decided to become a band. Since that time, they have molded and shaped their original sound.

LIP’s music is best described as laid-back, rhythm-based acoustic rock with tinges of hip-hop, reggae, blues and pop. LIP plays mostly originals, with lyrics ranging from complex and deep-thinking to simple and playful — songs about love, God, life and pursuing a greater purpose.

The Keiki Performing Arts Workshop will perform on the main stage at 1:30 p.m. KPAW is a two-week summer camp hosted by Kahilu Theatre for 24 youths ages 8-11 free of charge. The children will perform songs from musical theater favorites such as “Annie,” “Matilda,” “The King and I,” “Mary Poppins” and more.

Annetta Lucero will bring circus character walkabout and baton twirling to the Kahilu.

She’s a three-time world champion baton twirler and a two-time Guinness world record holder, a Cirque du Soleil special events artist and renowned choreographer. Her shows are at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Dance teachers from Kahilu’s after-school classes also will offer free workshops in hip hop, beginning ballet and contemporary dance. Lanakila Mangauil will offer open hula classes on the grass outside the theater.

Kahilu’s after-school classes, operated in conjunction with Prince Dance Institute, are doubling to 14 a week starting the second week of September. Online registration for the classes also will be open starting Aug. 10.

This will be the first of four Family Fun Days planned for Kahilu’s 2014-15 season.

The next Family Fun Day is slated Saturday, Nov. 22, to celebrate the Waimea Ukulele and Slack Key Guitar Institute and Festival.

Call the Kahilu box office at 885-6868 for more information about upcoming events, season subscriptions, membership and education programs.
