Takeko “Ella” Eguchi, 87, of Hilo died July 10 at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Facility. Born in Pepeekeo, she was a retired secretary for Hawaii Community College and member of Taishoji Soto Mission. Services held. No koden (monetary donations). Survived by daughters, Joan (Rick) Castberg of Hilo and Lois Eguchi of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; brothers, Kazuto “Lefty” (Mae) Okinaga of Pepeekeo and Ernest (Lucille) Okinaga of Honolulu; sisters, Sharon Abreu and Irene (Andrew) Yamakawa of Honolulu; one granddaughter; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Carol Ann Kato, 70, of Waianae, Oahu, died June 29 at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Born in Kailua-Kona, she was a public school teacher for 33 years, retired from Waianae Intermediate School and member of Kona Club of Honolulu and Halau Mapuna Leo. Visitation 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel on Oahu. Memorial service at 6:30 p.m. Private interment. Casual attire; flowers welcome. Survived by husband, Hideo Kato; sons, Michael (Cerry) Kato, Ryan Y. (Joann) Kato and Kevin (Jessica) Kato; brother, Grant (Elaine) Uehara; sisters, Aileen Kuboyama, Laura (Herbert) Kaku, Taggie (Roy) Okino and Stella Uehara; sister-in-law, Ethel Uehara, one grandchild; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Freitas Paiva, 85, of Honokaa died July 19 at home. Born in Kalopa, she was a retired cook for Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, senior volunteer at North Hawaii Education and Research Center and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and Honokaa Senior Citizens Club. Graveside urn committal service 9 a.m. Wednesday at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo. Survived by sons, Patrick Paiva of Honokaa and Dennis (Debbie) Paiva of Sacramento, Calif.; brother, Edwin Freitas of Ahualoa; sisters, Janet (Dan) Patten of Reno, Nev., and Pat (Fentiman) DeCambra of Waimea; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mercedes “Judy” Salmasan, 86, of Kealakekua died July 25 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Ka‘u, she was a retired coffee farmer, waitress for Naniloa Hotel, Teshima’s Restaurant, Sandy’s Drive-In and attendant for the former Jupiter Laundry. Visitation 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Kealakekua. Mass at 10 a.m. Burial at Kona Memorial Park. Luncheon to follow at Kona Imin Center in Holualoa. Aloha attire. Winifred “Chiko” Mitsuko Serion, 64, of Kealia died July 14 at her daughter’s home in Keauhou. She was a former cashier for Kailua-Kona Chevron and salesperson for the former Typewriter Center.
