A blessing and groundbreaking will take place at noon Tuesday for the $27.9 million southern segment of the Mamalahoa Highway Bypass.

The northern segment of the two-lane bypass, already open to the public, starts at the end of Alii Drive in Keauhou and runs approximately 3.5 miles to the makai end of Halekii Street in Kealakekua. Construction on this southern segment will extend the road 2.2 miles from Kealakekua to a signalized intersection at Napoopoo.

Tuesday’s ceremony will be held near the intersection of the Mamalahoa Highway Bypass and Halekii Street.

The $14.8 million roadway and $13.1 million reconstruction of the Napoopoo Road/Mamalahoa Highway intersection are both scheduled for completion in 2016.
