Tayana Cardoza, a 2014 graduate of Kealakehe High School, is the recipient of a four-year scholarship provided by the Dutch Schuman Big Island Paniolo Scholarship Fund.

She will study veterinary medicine at Weatherford College in Texas. Born and raised on the Big Island, Cardoza wants to become a big animal veterinarian. Upon completion of her formal education, she wants to return home, establish her own practice and serve as a role model for younger generations.

The scholarship award was given to her based on her livestock background, her public service and her determination to pursue her dream.

The scholarship fund was establish by the Schuman family to honor the life of Dutch Schuman, the third-generation leader of Schuman Carriage Company and owner of the SC Ranch in Paauilo.

The fund is dedicated to preserve Dutch’s legacy, and acknowledge his numerous contributions to the people of Hawaii.
