mainland trip

Keaukaha took third place in the silver bracket Sunday and finished with a 3-2 record at the AAU Jam on It West Coast National Championships in Las Vegas.

Before travelling to Las Vegas, Keaukaha went 5-1 in Seattle at the Midsummer Night Madness basketball tournament.

Coach Ben Pana said the primary goals of the girls basketball team’s mainland trip were to increase their level of competition and gain exposure to college coaches.

“We met both of those goals,” Pana said. “And the girls got to see what college life was all about.”

As expected, Hilo High junior Alexis Pana got her share of attention from scouts, but Ben Pana was pleased the Vikings’ Sharlei Graham-Bernisto, Shalyn Guthier and Chailey Cabalis gained notice as well.

“They mentioned Sharlei’s pressure defense, Chailey’s speed and Shalyn’s strength,” he said.
