The Hawaii County Council adopted design guidelines for Pahoa Village in a 9-0 vote last Friday.

The new guidelines apply to all renovations and new development within the Pahoa Village Design District that require a building permit.

Developed by the Pahoa Regional Town Center Plan Steering Committee, the guidelines are intended to promote the town’s historical character while making it more pedestrian friendly.

Features it seeks to enhance include low-rise buildings, canopies, landscaping of parking lots that front streets, and the burying of utility lines, among others.
