Police have charged a man arrested for allegedly shooting a housemate Thursday evening in South Kona.

Monte Moreau, 44, of Honaunau was charged Saturday with attempted second-degree murder. His bail was set at $100,000. He remains at the Kona police cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday.

At 6:35 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of a shooting on the 83-5300 block of Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 11) in Honaunau.

At a house occupied by several tenants, police found a 52-year-old resident with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The man was taken by ambulance to Kona Community Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police arrested Moreau at the scene. On Friday, detectives executed a search warrant at the home and recovered a handgun.
