Valerie Theresa Kossow, 89, of Kailua-Kona died June 19 at a private care facility. Born in Los Angeles, she was a telephone operator during World War II and former head statistician for NASA. Service and burial noon Friday, July 11, at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. Survived by son, Glenn (Barbara) Kossow of Kailua-Kona; sister, Margaret Kanov of Tujunga Hills, Calif.; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Cremation Services of West Hawaii.

Jason “Kaleo” Opiopio, 41, of Kailua-Kona died June 30. Born in Honolulu, he was the former owner of Pit Stop Auto Shop. Celebration of life 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, on the lawn of Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, 74-5490 Makala Boulevard in Kona. Survived by wife, Wendy (Campbell) Opiopio of Kailua-Kona; children, Chazelle, Haley and Dustin of Kailua-Kona; mother, Evelyn Opiopio of Kailua-Kona; stepmother, Christine Opiopio of Honolulu; sisters, Ronda (Jordan) Armstrong and Hulali Opiopio of Honolulu, Candice Gomes of Puna; grandmother, Ruth Vieau of Lahaina, Maui; grandfather, Gregory Opiopio of Honolulu; uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Kathleen Merseburgh Paiva, 66, of Honokaa died April 7 in Cypress, Calif. Born in Kohala, she was a musician and entertainer with Ben’s Haole Aikanes at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.. Private services. Survived by children, Amanda Decosta Altura and Victor Decosta of Costa Mesa, Calif., Kimberlee Cariaga of Hilo, Ammory Decosta of Cypress, Calif.; brothers, Alvin Merseburgh and Carl Merseburgh; six grandchildren.
