Five seniors were awarded East Hawaii Kiwanis Club-sponsored scholarships at their recent high school senior award ceremonies.

Five seniors were awarded East Hawaii Kiwanis Club-sponsored scholarships at their recent high school senior award ceremonies.

Scholarship winners are members of Key Club, a Kiwanis Club-sponsored leadership club, and were selected for their outstanding records of academic achievement, service to school and community, and participation in Kiwanis Family activities.

Kelly Soares and Ethyn Leong, graduates of Hilo High School, received Kiwanis Club and Charlene Masuhara Scholarships, named for the long-time Hilo High counselor, Key Club adviser and Kiwanis Club member.

Dyson Sato and Jennifer Taniguchi, graduates of Waiakea High School, received the club’s Yasuo and Hanako Kuwaye and Kiwanis Club scholarships, named in honor of the Kuwaye family’s generous contributions to the Kiwanis Club.

Casey Nakatsu of Hilo High School was awarded the $500 Goya Family Scholarship for outstanding Key Club members attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
