Students at Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii flexed their brain muscles at two national academic competitions this spring.
In April, the high school Academic Decathlon team finished second in its division at the U.S. Academic Decathlon national competition held in Honolulu. Students Alyssa Volivar, Rae Kuruhara, Ciarra-Lynn Parinas, Haylee Kushi, Raiden Domingo, Reece Naukana-Christensen, Sage Constantinou and Tom Ikeda made up this year’s award-winning team. The decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition which includes art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, speech and social science.
The KS Hawaii team placed second out of 16 Division III teams and 20th overall out of the 51 total teams from across the United States, China and the United Kingdom who were eligible to compete. The middle school Academic Pentathlon team recently returned from Omaha, Nebraska, where it secured a fifth-place finish in the national competition May 23-24.
This was the first time the competition was held as a face-to-face event. Previous years were just held online. Students Keahi Ishibashi, Charles Cordeiro, Kepola Ishikawa, Maya Rosof, Jacob Perry and Kaori Nishioka traveled to Omaha to take part in this academic competition.
