The Hilo Community Players (HCP) will launch its summer season — and celebrate 76 years of entertaining Hawaii — with an HCP Fun-Raiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at the Hilo Woman’s Club. The Players will present short scenes from their two plays opening in Kalakaua Park the following week: Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra,” opening at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, and the family comedy, “This is Hamlet,” opening at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12.

The HCP Fun-Raiser will also feature live music, comedy sketches, a silent auction, and the opportunity to take home vintage posters from past productions. Refreshments and light pupus will be served. The HCP was formed in 1938, and has presented a Shakespeare play in Kalakaua Park every summer since 1978, and at least one other play — often two or more — in the course of every year.
“Our production of ‘The Trial of Lili‘uokalani,’ last September, was one of the most acclaimed and successful in our 76-year history,” said HCP Secretary Hal Glatzer. “But we are an all-volunteer organization, and will always need donations to keep on entertaining the people of Hawaii.”
Tickets are a $20 donation to the HCP. They are available in advance at The Most Irresistible Shop, 256 Kamehmeha Ave. (cash or check only); and at the door, where credit cards will also be accepted. The Hilo Woman’s Club is at 7 Lele St., off Punahele Street. Additional parking is across Waianuenue Avenue by Gilbert Carvalho Park, where there is a pedestrian crosswalk leading directly to the club.
