Recycle Hawaii extends its mahalo and congratulations to over 300 students and 24 schools islandwide that participated in our 9th annual Art of Recycling School Competition (ARSC) held in April. This event displayed recycled art created by students from pre-school, elementary, middle and high school levels attending public, private and home schools on Hawaii island. Mahalo to all of the participating schools and their teachers and students.

East Hawaii students submitted a total of 52 entries, which were displayed April 4-8 at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo: Ernest B. de Silva Elementary School, Ka Umeke Kaeo Public Charter School, Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School, Mountain View Elementary School, Naalehu Elementary School — KSLIS, Olson Home School, Pahala Elementary School — KSLIS, Pahala Summer Fun, Waiakeawaena Elementary School, Hawaii Technology Academy, St. Joseph School and Keaau High School. Mahalo to juror/recycle artist Susan Champeny; Prince Kuhio Plaza and Beverly Crudele; and volunteers from Kaiser High School and Hilo Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

West Hawaii students submitted a total of 37 entries, which were displayed April 11-15 at Kona International Market in Kona. Schools represented were Kahakai Elementary School, Ocean View Home School and Hawaii Technology Academy. Mahalo to juror-recycle educator Howard Shapiro; Kona International Market and Sandi Fassbender; and volunteers from Kailua-Kona Seniors. Kahakai Elementary School received an Outstanding School Award for its own school-wide Recyclable Art Contest, in which over 400 recycle art works are displayed in the school’s library and juried for selected entries that advance to the Art of Recycling event.

North Hawaii students submitted a total of 47 entries, which were displayed on April 24-26, April 30 to May 2 at Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. Participating schools were Heartlight Montessori Homeschool, Hawaii Technology Academy, Waimea Country School, Waimea Elementary School, Waimea Middle School and Kohala High School.

Mahalo also to juror/recycle artist Jay West, staff-artists of Firehouse Gallery/Waimea Arts Council and volunteer Howard Shapiro.
