The Hawaii Habitat for Humanity Association and the seven local Habitat for Humanity program offices — or affiliates — will partner with local businesses, community organizations, and government agencies for the Eighth Annual Build-a-Thon to support its mission of providing affordable housing across the state to low-income families.

This year’s Build-a-Thon takes place July 11-13 and includes a variety of events, including special builds and revitalization projects scheduled on Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai and the Big Island.

“For an individual or family who does not have a roof over their head, providing them with a home — a safe place to sleep and play — can mean all the difference in the world,” said Jean Lilley, the association’s executive director. “Our annual Build-a-Thon raises awareness for the work we do to put these families into homes and shows the community how their gift can go a long way in creating a home for our island ohana.”

Across the state, Habitat for Humanity’s seven community-level offices cater to their respective geographic areas. Each of these affiliates is hosting and accepting volunteers for projects and will provide training. Typically, no previous experience is required. Volunteers are asked to donate or raise at least $100 to participate in the Build-a-Thon and will receive refreshments and a commemorative shirt for participation in the project.

Habitat for Humanity-West Hawaii will be hosting a “Zumba for the Build-a-Thon” event at one of its build sites. Participants are asked to donate $5, and can register at the event or online by visiting www.habitatwesthawaii.org. For more information, call 331-8010.

Hale Aloha O Hilo Habitat for Humanity will be painting a veteran’s home in Fern Acres from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, July 12. If anyone is interested in more information on volunteering, please contact Hilo Habitat resource development Chair Adrienne Eisele at Adrienne@hilohabitat.org.

The association is Hawaii’s statewide support organization for Habitat for Humanity International. Founded in 1997, Hawaii Habitat is a resource development and support organization that connects, strengthens, and accelerates the work of local affiliates. The process brings together volunteer labor and donations with low-income partner families who purchase homes through no-profit, no-interest mortgages.
