The 78th Hawaii Region Y Service Club International Convention was held at Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) on the weekend of May 30-June 1. Y Service clubs are men, women and youth volunteers dedicated to providing service to local YMCAs and communities on Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai.

Nearly 70 members and guests from Hawaii, Japan, Singapore and the U.S. mainland attended the weekend convention. The convention started with a luncheon at Nani Mau Gardens with keynote speaker John Kai, Hilo-born founder and owner of Pinnacle Investment Inc.

The convention had something for everyone, but the signature program was the “Service to Our Military Families”a community service project. The project yield 100 “Aloha Gift Bags” for families and retirees at KMC. Y service members and local business — including Big Island Candies, Hilo Surplus Store, Big Island Delight, West Hawaii McDonald’s and Pinnacle Investments — donated over 20 items including tote bags, children coloring books and crayons, 2015 Hawaii calendars, cookies, pens and even military can openers.

The gifts bags were given to the military families in appreciation for their service to our county. Bobby Stivers-Apiki, CEO of The Island of Hawaii YMCA, was elected regional director of the Hawaii Region Y Service Clubs. There are nine Y Service Clubs in the state.
