Your neighborhood elections polling place is calling, with plenty of opportunities around the Big Island on Saturday, Aug. 9, and Tuesday, Nov. 4, for folks to get involved in the electoral process. The targeted audience is anyone age 16 or older by June 30.
“Assisting your neighbors and fellow citizens as an Election Day official is a fun, challenging and rewarding experience,” explained county Elections Division staffer Kui Kama. “This is your opportunity to volunteer your services to the community, and at the same time gain first-hand knowledge and experience in the electoral process.”

“This is a great opportunity to help out. Not only does your organization earn money, you are getting involved and participating in the electoral process,” Kama said.
On Election Day, the polls are open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Precinct officials, however, start at 5:30 a.m. and end their assignments at 6:30 p.m.
Each precinct official must be a registered voter in Hawaii as of June 30, or “pre-registered” if ages 16-17; be able to read and write in English; able to lift 25-35 pounds; be able to attend a training session and pass a certification exam.
The compensation rates for each Election Day worked are: polling place chair, $115-$175; voter-assistant official, $100; precinct official, $85; and facility official, $60-$140.
“Every vote counts and so does your help,” Kama said.
