Hilo High School Special Olympics athletes, alongside their regular education Unified Partners, competed at the annual State Summer Games from May 30-June 1 on Oahu.

Many medals were won by the Vikings as they showcased their skills in track and field events. The students motivated each other and other delegations from across the state. The athletes practiced for months leading up to the event.

The collaboration was through Hilo High School’s Project UNIFY program, which is an educational- and sports-based program that promotes awareness, acceptance and respect for students with intellectual disabilities.

Together, with the support of Special Olympics/Project UNIFY, volunteers and parents, Hilo High School was able to promote its message of unity and pride.

Service groups interested in more information about Project UNIFY can contact Jo Ann Nishimoto at 974-4021, ext. 2268.
