A passerby who noticed black smoke coming from a vacant Waiakea Uka home Monday evening may have saved the house from destruction.
According to a written Fire Department statement, the passerby notified a neighbor, who called 911 at 6:04 p.m. Five units responded. The first arrived on scene at 6:14 p.m. and noticed the back downstairs door had been forced open and a fire deemed “suspicious” was burning on the bottom floor outside the bathroom.
The fire was reported under control at 6:25 p.m. and extinguished two minutes later.
Fire officials estimated the loss at $1,000 to the two-story structure built in the 1950s and estimated $140,000 in property value saved.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
